  1. (POSTPONED: DATE TBD) LECTURE: Women on Wheels: How Women Found Freedom through Bicycling

    April 15, 2020, 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM @ Barron Arts Center

THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN POSTPONED. PLEASE CHECK BACK SOON FOR A NEW SCHEDULED DATE. Is it surprising that in the 1890s conservatives panicked at visions of women riding alone, with other women, or with unsuitable men, and campaigned to stop them? When women and girls first rode bicycles in large numbers, they celebrated their new freedom to move around in the world. This PSP program will ask audiences to consider how bicycling and other means of mobility have affected history and our own levels of physical activity. Presented by Ellen Gruber Garvey, Ph.D. Professor of English, New Jersey City University. Reservations Essential. Call: 732-634-0413 This program has been made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities(NEH) and the New Jersey Council for the Humanities (NJCH). Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of the NEH or NJCH.
